EP 43: Here's Why Your Labor Isn't Starting

As your due date nears, you’re likely feeling prepared, excited, and maybe even a little anxious for labor to start.

But if it feels like you’re just waiting and waiting, you’re definitely not alone. Many moms find themselves ready to go but wondering why labor hasn't started.

Here, we’ll explore some reasons why labor might be delayed and offer some natural ways to encourage it safely.

Understanding Why Labor May Not Start Right Away

  1. Hormone Imbalance
Hormones, particularly oxytocin, are essential for starting labor. High stress or anxiety can raise adrenaline, which counters oxytocin. Try to relax, stay calm, and trust that your body knows what it’s doing.

  2. Baby’s Position
Sometimes, a baby isn’t positioned ideally, which can delay labor. Baby’s head needs to be pressing down on your cervix to help it open. Gentle exercises and movements can help get your baby in an optimal position for labor.

  3. Physical Factors
Dehydration, lack of movement, and overall low energy can influence labor readiness. Staying hydrated and taking light walks can promote circulation and keep your body in good shape for labor.

  4. Stress and Anxiety
Feeling pressured to give birth by a specific time can ironically delay labor. Try to enjoy these last days of pregnancy, stay calm, and avoid overthinking your due date.

Natural Tips to Encourage Labor

  • Gentle Movement: Walk, dance, or use a birthing ball to encourage baby’s position and apply pressure on your cervix.
  • Stay Hydrated: Water is your best friend for keeping everything, including your uterus, functioning optimally.
  • Visualization & Breathing Exercises: Picture your baby moving down, visualize your cervix opening, and practice deep breathing for a relaxed mindset.
  • Nipple Stimulation: This can help naturally release oxytocin, which can stimulate labor.

What to Avoid

  • Overdoing Exercise: Gentle movement is great, but avoid intense workouts that could leave you exhausted before labor even begins.
  • Watching the Clock: Remember, due dates are estimates. If labor hasn’t started, it’s often best to trust that your body and baby know when the right time is.

If you’re at or past your due date and feeling worried, don’t hesitate to contact your healthcare provider. They’re there to help and can provide guidance on next steps if needed.
