Today, we’re breaking down 8 signs that labor could be near so you know what to expect in the coming days. Let’s dive into what your body might be telling you!
As you approach labor, your mind and emotions often become more active. You may feel an energy boost or the urge to clean and organize. This nesting instinct is a common way for your body to prepare for labor. Feeling unusually calm, emotional, or impatient can also signal labor’s approach.
“Lightning” describes the sensation when your baby shifts lower into your pelvis. This can make it easier to breathe since there’s less pressure on your lungs. However, you may feel increased pressure lower down—a sure sign that labor is drawing near!
Your body produces more mucus as your cervix softens. This may mean thicker discharge or even the loss of the mucus plug, which is like a thick, jelly-like blob. If you see streaks of blood (known as the “bloody show”), it’s a sign that things are moving along.
Your uterus begins mild contractions that can feel like dull back pain or menstrual cramps. This discomfort often doesn’t go away with movement or position changes. When you feel this, it’s a sign your body is preparing.
The hormone relaxin helps your pelvis and ligaments loosen to prepare for labor. You may notice your joints feel more relaxed, and you may feel extra pressure in your pelvis as baby moves into position.
Braxton Hicks contractions often pick up in frequency as you near labor. However, true contractions are consistent and become stronger. If you notice this pattern, labor could be close!
Some women experience nausea, diarrhea, or even vomiting as the body “clears out” before labor. It’s your body’s way of preparing for the journey ahead.
Finally, many moms experience sleeplessness or feel unusually restless in the days leading up to labor. This may be your body’s way of getting ready, so take time to rest when you can.
These signs are your body’s way of telling you it’s almost time to meet your little one. Every mom experiences labor signs differently, so take these as general cues.
